Latest News - November 27th:Hola a todos I am now in Comitán which is very close to the border between Chiapas (Mexico) and Guatemala. I have just finished a week of language courses in San Cristóbal. I think it will be very useful, or perhaps necessary, to speak better Spanish. I still confuse all the verb tenses, but at least I know now that is such a thing as verb tenses and stuff. San Cristóbal was a very pleasant town to be in, with lots of bars, cafés, book shops and live music. There are quite a bit of travellers there, whereas I haven't seen a single other "gringo" here in Comitán. San Cristóbal is also sort of a cultural and economical center for the Mayan indians, who come there to trade handcrafts and other stuff on the markets. And it is the base of the Zapatista "rebels" who turned violent in ´94 but now seem to have calmed down a bit. In Chiapas, I have also seen a few impressive Mayan ruins and a lot of beautiful scenery. Tomorrow I will go to Guatemala - it was nice knowing you all... :-) I will probably head to Antigua to do some kayaking, and then pick up Mathias in the airport next Friday. Best wishes, mange hilsner Fred(e) |
This page is being updated while we are on the road. Internet access comes
and goes along the way, but I am aiming at new stories and pictures every week
or two.

Theresa is keeping an excellent, detailed travel diary for the first part of the trip. You can find it on her web pages.
